October 16, 2011
This week is the last week for this year's CSA season.
I would like to thank all of you for participating in the CSA this year. By taking part in the CSA you provide the farm much needed support that keeps the farm going. Over the next week or so I will be sending out an end of season survey to all of year to get your feedback on the season so keep your eyes out for that.
I am often asked about how I stay busy over the winter as it is pretty hard to grow plants in Wisconsin in the winter. However, there is much that goes into the farm that keeps me busy for much of the winter. Actually, I have been busier for the past week or two with assorted projects than the preceding month, and expect that to continue for at least another couple of weeks. Around this time of year I am busy planting garlic, planting over-wintered cover crops, prepping the soil in areas of the field for next year, spreading manure from the neighbor's cattle, and packing up trellising, irrigation, and assorted other equipment from this season. This progresses into planning all of the crops for next year, ordering seeds, putting together whatever paperwork the farm needs, and several dozen projects I've been saving up for the winter, most of which I probably won't make as much progress on as I would like before I get busy again next spring.
In your last boxes will be sweet potatoes, carrots, green onions, leeks, potatoes, probably brussels sprouts and chard. Also, I will be clearing out odds and ends that I have either in the field or the garage so you may see some beets, garlic, parsnip, kale, or whatever else I happen to have around.
